Opel Ampera

At the 79th Geneva Motor Show, General Motors Europe president, Carl-Peter Forster, unveiled the revolutionary Opel Ampera and announced plans to put it into production by late 2011. The extended-range electric vehicle, which is also available in right-hand drive in the United Kingdom under the Vauxhall brand, is equipped with GM's innovative Voltec electric propulsion system. The five-door, four-seat Ampera is characterized by Opel's award-winning design language combining sculptural artistry and German precision, and is specially designed with styling cues inspired by the Flextreme and GTC Concept show cars. "The Opel Ampera further demonstrates GM's leadership in the electrification of the automobile, and there could not be a more fitting way to celebrate Opel's 110 years of innovation in the car industry," commented Alain Visser, GME Vice President Opel. Driven solely by electric power, the Ampera is capable of covering a range of up to 60 km (MVEG). When its 16-kWh, lithium-ion battery runs out of energy, the car's engine-generator takes over to extend the range to more than 500 km, while the vehicle can be recharged with any household 230v outlet. GM Europe is currently analyzing the requirements of a recharging infrastructure for plug-in electric cars with energy companies such as Iberdrola of Spain.
