Opel GT 1968 posters

Opel GT

The Opel GT has grown to become a classic car, something that could be said without surprise after it debuted its "Experimental Concept" at the 1965 IAA in Frankfurt. This marked the first time a concept car had gone into production in Europe, resulting in a sleek two-seater that bore resemblance to the 1968 American Corvette. This new design was called the "Coke Bottle Shape", and Opel's GT was designed for aerodynamics at its forefront. Its 1.9-liter engine propelled the sports car to a top speed of 185 km/h and an impressive 0-100 km/h speed of 10.8 seconds. This speed was excellent for the time, as other vehicles of the era such as the Rekord 1.9 and the Porsche 912 with its four cylinders (though the latter had a slightly slower 0-100 km/h time). The Opel GT was a clear performance leader in the upper mid-class segment of the late 1960s. The slogan "Only Flying is More Exciting" has since become engrained in automotive memedom.
