Opel Kapitan 1959 posters

Opel Kapitan

In the fall of 1959, the all-new Opel Kapitan (internally known as the Opel Kapitan P2 2.6-liter) came off the production line in Rüsselsheim. With its unique design, optimized comfort, and cutting-edge technology, it soon proved to be a hit: by 1964, a total of 145,616 units were sold - making the P2 2.6-liter the most successful Opel Kapitan of all time. Fast-forward to the present day, the successor to the Rüsselsheim top-model - the Opel Insignia - is continuing this illustrious legacy. After less than 12 months in distribution, the innovative car has already gained an impressive 150,000 drivers. An impressive five decades of progress has been made in automotive engineering between the two models, yet both of them, each in their own way, have made a considerable contribution to the brand with its now iconic lightning-bolt emblem. Opel Kapitan P2 2.6-liter - "More value for less money" Gone were the sweeping lines, softly transitioning contours and American-influenced aesthetics of the first postseason Opel Kapitan when its second generation hit the market in autumn of 1959. "The emphasis is now firmly put on distinguishable horizontal lines and pronounced contours," remarked a contemporary review. The result was a stronger and sleeker body, embellished further by the noticeably flat roof. In addition, a wider panoramic windscreen and reshaped roof edges increased driver visibility and access for rear-seat passengers. The Opel Kapitan P2 2.6-liter engine was one of the model's most remarkable features, producing a respectable 66 kW/90 hp and up to 190 Newton meters of torque, available between 1,300 and 2,500 revs. It was even praised for its smooth running, thanks to a new engine mount, which improved noise insulation and vibration dampening. Through the years, further technological advancements such as an "actuation aid" for the clutch pedal, as well as the later introductions of "Hydra-Matic" automatic transmission and power steering, cemented the Sixty as a reference in terms of comfort and tech. Yet, price-wise, Opel managed to keep the Kapitan's tag unchanged compared to its predecessor, thus further contributing to its success.
