Opel Signum V6 CDTI
The Opel Signum is a large family car produced by General Motors in Germany since 2003. It is mostly sold in Europe and the United Kingdom, where it's known as the Vauxhall Signum. It is based on the Opel Vectra and utilizes the long-wheelbase version of the GM Epsilon platform. The Signum has an uncommon concept of a tall hatchback with a steep tailgate. Its measurements put it in the middle of large family cars and executive cars, and its pricing tends to follow the same correlation. The Signum was introduced to partially substitute the discontinued Opel Omega as an affordable luxury car and create an entirely new market segment.
In North America, an equivalent vehicle, called the Chevrolet Malibu Maxx, is based on a similar concept and platform but aimed towards a different audience.
Differences compared to Vectra
In comparison with a standard 5-door Vectra, the Signum has an extended wheelbase of 13 cm, is 23 cm longer overall, yet the same width, and 6 mm taller. This gives the rear seating generous legroom. Two separate rear seats instead of a three-passenger bench seat are present and can be adjusted in many different ways, such as sliding back and forth (similar to the front seats) or reclining backrests. There is additionally a slim central section that has a folding armrest and can be transformed into a third seat. The cargo room can be extended by the ability to fold each rear seat down separately. The Signum features components of the Vectra's body and interior, particularly the full dashboard and front seats. Moreover, the tailgate and rear fender design is exclusive to the Signum. In 2005, the Signum was refreshed with a new front fascia design and other minor changes.
All Signums are constructed in Rüsselsheim, Germany, where Vectra cars are also built.
