Horacio Pagani, who used to work for Lamborghini, created his own company, Pagani Composite Research, in 1988. The company did the restyling of Lamborghini models. In 1991, Pagani created Modena Design, which provided design, engineering and prototyping services. In 1992, Pagani Automobili S.p.A. was created. The same year, Pagani started to work at a Fangio F1 prototype. In 1994, Mercedes V12 engines started to be used for the cars. The final model of the car was presented at 1999 Geneva Motor Show after the death of Horacio Pagani. It was named after the late creator, the Pagani Zonda C12.
Despite being an independent company, Pagani cooperates with AMG division of Daimler AG. Pagani provided help during the development of Chrysler ME Four-Twelve. Mercedes, in its turn, provides engines for Pagani cars. The M158 engine for the Pagani Huayra was developed exclusively for this model.
