The Peugeot 307 is a small family car manufactured by the French auto maker Peugeot since 2001. It was awarded the 2002 European Car of the Year.
History
The 307 was first debuted as the 307 Prométhée concept at the 2000 Mondial de l'Automobile. The production hatchback versions were released into the European markets in 2001 and succeeded the highly successful Peugeot 306. This model had surpassed its class when it first came out in 1993, until the introduction of the Mk 4 Volkswagen Golf and Mk 2 Opel Astra/Mk 4 Vauxhall Astra in 1997.
In the four years following its inaugural launch, the 306 had headed its class, fending off new contenders, primarily the Focus, released in 1998. This model was much newer and more refined than the 306, and the competition was so vast that the 306 was unable to keep up and began to lag behind. Consequently, the 307 was created as its replacement in 2001.
