Peugeot 908HY
Peugeot Sport showcased its responseto the 2008 Le Mans Series with the unveiling of the
Peugeot 908 HDi FAP - boasting a hybrid power plant. The 908HY was indicated with a silver-grey livery, hinting at what the future may bring, given the new regulations to be enforced in the LMP 1 class for 2009.
This radical technology works by harvesting kinetic energy produced by the braking of the 908HY. Ordinarily, ordinary non-hybrid cars will squander such energy and dissipate it as heat, however, the Peugeot 908HY effectively converts such energy into stored or recovered usage available at any time - thereby enhancing the performance of the car. This is conducted through the use of a 60Kw gear-driven electric motor-generator and 600 lithium-ion cells, distributed in 10 battery packs - 6 housed in the cockpit and 4 more near the left-hand side of the floor pan. The electric motor-generator can power the car in one of three ways: electric only (for instance while in the pits), internal combustion engine only, or a combination of the two. During a lap of Le Mans, for instance, the system can recuperate energy over 20-30 seconds. This energy stockpile can be conjured for extra power, through an additional burst of 60Kw over a 20 second period or reduced fuel consumption - up to 5% - for the same performance.
Michel Barge (Peugeot Sport, Director) remarked:
"This hybrid Peugeot 908HY abides by the overall mission of our endurance racing programme, in that it offers an opportunity for research and advancement for the Peugeot brand. With HDi FAP technology leading the way on the competition (track) and a hybrid car in endurance racing, the experience will be invaluable for the production cars of the future. The eventual implementation of this technology will depend on the regulations of the Automobile Club de l'Ouest in 2009."
