Plymouth Hemi Barracuda

As the new year of 1970 dawned, yet another redesign of the Barracuda took place, now identified as the 'Cuda due to its powerful performance versions. The E-body platform, slightly shorter and wider than the previous A-body version, brought to the Barracuda a sporty look - different from the fastback design of the previous generations. The Dodge Challenger was released as its near-twin, with the exception of the fact that no body panel between the two vehicles could be exchanged and the Challenger had a longer wheelbase. Clearly influenced by the first generation Chevrolet Camaro, they both had a clean and aggressive style. With the E platform, the larger engine bay enabled Chrysler to offer their famous 426 in³ (7.0 L) Hemi straight from the factory on the Barracuda. Fuel efficiency was a mere 6 MPG, but the performance it delivered was powerful and outstanding - quarter-mile times of 13.7 s @ 103 mph and 13.4 s @ 108 mph, among the fastest at the time. Installing and slightly modifying this engine soon had these vehicles dropping into the 12s. Decal sets, hood modifications and exotic colours - Go Mango, Plum Crazy and Panther Pink - all gave the Barracuda a desired appearance. Racing drivers Swede Savage and Dan Gurney, with identical factory-sponsored Barracudas, competed in the 1970 Trans-Am Series, though without achieving any wins. Although the 1971 Barracuda remained with the same engine options from the previous model, a new grille, 4 headlights, taillights and optional fender "gills" gave it a different look. The 1972 and 1974 models, while maintaining the same basic look of dual headlights and 4 round taillights, did gain large bumper guards to meet safety regulations. Power decreased as emission laws tightened the years, with the 360 engine being the largest offered in 1974. By this time, Chrysler ended the Barracuda's production, 10 years after its release and declination of sales due to competitors' success, making certain models more desired and rare among collectors.
