Pontiac Aztek 2003 posters

Pontiac Aztek

The Pontiac Aztek was a mid-size crossover SUV produced by the General Motors marque Pontiac from the 2001 to the 2005 model year. It is renowned for its polarizing exterior design, which has been the subject of considerable ridicule from both consumers and the media.

Background

In light of the fact that the vast majority of SUVs are rarely taken off-road, manufacturers aimed to create a "crossover" SUV that provides the main benefits of an SUV – cargo carrying capacity and an elevated seating height – while getting rid of the negative aspects like poor fuel consumption, an uncomfortable ride, and a higher risk of rolling over.

SUVs such as the popular Lexus RX300 and Toyota Highlander demonstrated that the idea of a car-based "soft-road" SUV could be profitable and attractive to customers.

Original concept

In 1999, the Pontiac Aztek concept car was publicly revealed and generally positively received. Its futuristic styling was designed to appeal to the "Generation 'X' buyer demographic".

Upon its launch in 2001, the Aztek was advertised with the slogan: "Quite possibly the most versatile vehicle on the planet". The launch was accompanied by a partnership with the hit CBS game show, Survivor.
