Pontiac Firebird 2001 posters

Pontiac Firebird

The Pontiac Firebird was a sporty compact car produced by the Pontiac Motor Division of General Motors and manufactured from 1967 until 2002. Featuring both coupé and convertible body styles, the Firebird was characterized by its sleek styling and affordable muscle car power. Developed on the same General Motors "F-Body" platform as the Chevrolet Camaro, the Firebird also had similar qualities to the Mercury Cougar, a pony car sharing its platform with the Ford Mustang. The Firebird was equipped with V8s from various GM divisions, with Pontiac-powered units up until 1981 and different engine types after. Fourth generation (1993-2002) In its fourth generation, the Firebird model maintained its aerodynamic aesthetic but suffered from decreased sales. Power was provided by either a 3.4 L V6 with 160 hp, a 5.7 L LT1 V8 with 275 hp in 1993-1995 (with a 305-325 hp rating after 2000), or a 3.8 L V6 boasting 200 hp. Along came modifications to the pop-up headlamps, notably with four pop-ups for 1998's model, while the Corvette-derived LS1 5.7 L V8 was introduced in 1998. At the same time, the Camaro had shifted to recessed headlights. SLP's Firehawk edition with a 330 hp rating (rising to 345 after 2000) was available from Pontiac dealerships. With a 0-60 mph reachable in 5.3 seconds and a 1/4 mile sprint that rarely exceeded 13.4 seconds, these models remain some of the fastest Firebirds ever constructed. In 2002, a 35th anniversary edition was released, commemorating the 1969 Trans Am. Production finalised in 2002, with the Sainte-Thérèse, Quebec plant hosting the last cars.
