Pontiac G6 GT 2005 posters

Pontiac G6 GT

The Pontiac G6 is a mid-size car released in 2005. It uses the GM Epsilon platform, sharing it with the Chevrolet Malibu, Saab 9-3, Saturn Aura, Opel Vectra, and Cadillac BLS. The G6 is a replacement for the Pontiac Grand Am, and is reminiscent of the Mitsubishi Galant and Ford Fusion. Its launch was a major publicity stunt - 276 cars were famously given away to audience members of The Oprah Winfrey Show on the show's fall 2004 season premiere, resulting in US$110 million in publicity and putting the G6 on the lists of many shoppers. Although the G6 was new, it could be seen as the sixth generation of the Grand Am (with G6 standing for Grand Am 6th Generation). It won consumer-based awards from JD Power, Strategic Vision, and became a Consumer Reports Recommended Buy. It was also awarded Car of the Year by the Spanish magazine Automundo.

The G6 is available as a coupe, convertible, and sedan, with the convertible model arriving on dealership lots in spring 2006. The G6 has had different engine options over its lifetime, with the base model typically running a four cylinder engine, and higher models offering a V6 engine. GM delayed the release of more economical four cylinder models and the coupé and convertible G6.

Plant

The Pontiac G6 is the replacement for the Pontiac Grand Am which ceased production in 2005, when the 100-year old Lansing, Michigan assembly plant closed. Most of the workers affected moved to the new Delta Township, Michigan assembly plant in late 2006. The G6 is produced in the Orion Township, Michigan assembly plant.
