In late 2003, the America market saw the relaunch of the Pontiac GTO - based on the Holden Monaro's V platform - to much criticism from muscle car enthusiasts who said a redesign of the GTO from the ground up would be more nostalgic and could yield better sales. Equipped with the Chevrolet Corvette's LS1 V8 engine and a choice of either a 6-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission, the GTO is also sold in the U.K. as a Vauxhall and in the Middle East as a Chevrolet. But after dismal sales in 2004 - forcing production to be cut to just 12,000 per year - the GTO offered an optional hood scoop and a Pulse Red package, with only 800 built, in an effort to increase the car's sportiness.
