Pontiac Grand Am GT Coupe

The fifth-generation Pontiac Grand Am, which arrived in late spring 1998, was based on the same design as the Oldsmobile Alero (which was new for 1999) and Chevrolet Malibu (introduced in 1997). It was slightly shorter than its predecessor, but longer in terms of its wheelbase, with a revised MacPherson-Strut design up front and a Multi-link design in the rear for a more refined suspension. It was available in five trim levels - SE, SE1, SE2, GT, and GT1 - and the standard engine was a 2.4L Twin Cam offering 150hp (112KW) and 155 lb·ft (210Nm) of torque, with a 3.4L V6 (previously exclusive to minivans) available as an option both on the SE and SE1 trims and standard on the other trims. The transmission was a four-speed automatic unit for all Grand Am trim levels in 1999, with a five-speed manual (manufactured by Getrag) being made standard on 4-cylinder trims in 2000. Upgrade packages were available, including 4-wheel disc brakes on the GT and GT1, as well as Ram Air induction on the Grand Am GTs, which provided an extra five horsepower and 5 lb/ft of torque over the 3.4L V6 when installed in any of the SE-level trims. For 2001, the SE2 trim level was dropped and Delco-made radios with different wheel designs were introduced. In 2002, the 2.4L Twin Cam engine was replaced with a 2.2L Ecotec four-cylinder, offering slightly less power at 140hp (104kW) and 150 lb·ft (203 Nm) of torque with a stationary cup holder in the center console replacing the removable one. The body cladding on the SE models was removed in 2003 and Anti-Lock Brakes and Traction control were made optional, with a MP3 player being introduced to the uplevel CD player in 2004. By 2005, Pontiac began phasing out the Grand Am lineup for the new G6 replacement - the last Grand Am being rolled off the Lansing Michigan's Fisher Body Plant on May 10, 2005.
