Pontiac Sunfire Coupe

The Pontiac Sunfire was introduced in the 1995 model year, taking the place of the Sunbird. It boasted a dramatic new look, which was also shared with the Chevrolet Cavalier (although the name remained unchanged). Additionally, the J platform was updated structurally to comply with the newer safety regulations. Models of the Sunfire ranged from coupes to convertibles, although the convertible versions were no longer in production after 2000, and Pontiac released an upgraded Sunfire.

In the United States, the Sunfire was only offered as a coupe from 2003 to 2005, making it the only two-door in Pontiac's roster between the 2002 discontinuation of the Firebird and the 2004 relaunching of the GTO. Meanwhile, in Canada the sedan was still for sale until the entire line was discontinued. The Sunfire was manufactured at either the Lordstown, Ohio plant, or Ramos Arizpe, Mexico. The model was in production until June of 2005, with 36,000 sold in the US while Canadian sales amounted to 33,724.

The standard model was outfitted with a 2.2 L engine from 1995 until 2002, while the GT model came with a more powerful 2.3 L and replaced it with an even better 2.4 L motor the following year. By 2003, both engines had been replaced with a new 2.2 L Ecotec, which was also offered in the late 2002 models.
