Pontiac Vibe GT

The Pontiac Vibe is a stylish car produced in Fremont, California by NUMMI, a joint venture between General Motors and Toyota. It is a practical, tall station wagon that has a trendy, SUV-inspired look. It was first shown to the public at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January 2000 and went on sale as a 2003 model. Toyota also sells the same vehicle as the Toyota Matrix, shaking off capacity issues by producing it in Toyota’s plant in Cambridge, Ontario, Canada. The Vibe is fitted with a regular household-style 115 volts AC electrical outlet, so customers can use common electrical devices inside the car without an inverter. It offers three powertrain variants, a fuel-efficient 1.8 L I4 16-valve engine, producing 126 hp on the base model (manual or automatic transmission) and 118 hp on the All-Wheel Drive model (automatic only), or a version with VVTL-i making 164 hp for the GT (6-speed manual only). The model has achieved great fuel economy ratings – currently the highest for a GM vehicle in North America. During the early model years, the GT had 180 hp, the base model 130 hp, and the all-wheel drive model 126 hp. However, engine power claims decreased to current levels in 2006, following Toyota’s engine testing for the new SAE ratings standard. The Vibe was refreshed in the 2005 model year with a new front design that carries the Pontiac Solstice look. Unfortunately, the all-wheel drive and GT versions will be dropped this year after suffering from lack of sales and falling in line with new federal emissions standards, leaving only the base Vibe in production.
