Porsche 911 Carrera

The fourth generation of the 911, the 993, proved to be one of the most sought-after editions in the legendary vehicle's history. Boasting an exciting reinterpretation of the 911 design with sleek concave and convex forms, integrated bumpers, flush-mounted windows and a wide rear end with an angled tail-light panel, the 993 swept car enthusiasts off their feet. Its front wings were also a true novelty, benefitting from the new polyellipsoid headlights to achieve a flatter style. This generation of the 911 was praised not only for its design but also for its technical features, such as the redesigned LSA aluminium chassis, which combined light weight, stability and agility. It was the pinnacle of the Weissack rear axle invention, providing unprecedented driving dynamics and comfort levels. In 1995, the two-wheel-driven Porsche 911 Turbo was further augmented with two turbochargers, raising its power output to an outstanding 408 PS and establishing the lowest exhaust emissions of any series-production unit at the time. In the same year, the Targa 911 harnessed a new concept with an electric glass roof that slid under the rear window. Furthermore, Porsche launched the Carrera 4S— Later followed by the Carrera S—that combined the wide body and chassis of the 911 Turbo, but without the rear wing. The flat-six engine of the 993 was renowned for being the last type to employ air cooling. Although its initial power was 272 PS, thanks to the twin-spark ignition, by 1995 the engine could deliver up to 285 PS and an optional 300 PS variant. Moreover, it received a sixth forward gear for a maximum speed of 270 km/h, and the manual transmission was also improved for faster and more precise gear changes. In 1998, the 993 marked the end of air-cooled engines after 35 years and set the stage for its successor to achieve unprecedented success. Over 68,881 were produced between 1993 and 1998.
