Porsche combined the familiar silhouette of the classic 911 model with state-of-the-art technology when they introduced the third generation of the 911 sports car, the type 964, in 1988. This was an important bet for the company during a time of economic struggle, and the first model variants immediately showed that this bet was a winning one. For the first time in this series, the Carrera 4 variant featured an all-wheel-drive system with electronically-controlled power distribution, all thanks to the anti-lock braking system's sensors. Not long after, Porsche released the 911 Carrera 2 and its convertible and Targa versions. Though the body of the model was mostly unchanged, 85% of the components featured on the 964 were newly designed and integrated. The air-cooled flat-six engine was improved with a 3.6-liter displacement, delivering an impressive 250 PS. This engine also incorporated a twin-spark ignition, developed by Porsche for aircrafts, and provided a retractable rear spoiler. Furthermore, the Porsche 911 Carrera 2 Cabrio also featured the adaptive Tiptronic gearbox as standard equipment, allowing for a seamless transition between gears. The 964 had its fair share of special models, such as the 911 Jubilee and 911 Speedster. The former celebrated the 911's 30th anniversary, with only 911 units made available, quickly selling out. The Speedster, apart from its shortened windscreen, was especially recognizable due to its double-bubble cover behind the front seat. Undoubtedly, the crown jewels of the 964 model series were the turbocharged versions. The initial engine had 3.3 liters and was good for 320 PS, but in 1993 Porsche launched the 3.6-liter engine providing 360 PS, outdoing its predecessor in every way. In total, 930 Speedster cars were produced, alongside 63,762 other type 964 vehicles in the very successful span of 1988 to 1994.
