The
Porsche Boxster is becoming increasingly popular in the two-seater open sports car segment. Having proven its capabilities as a lightweight performer that uses very little fuel, the mid-engined roadster now in its second generation proves to be an even greater champion of fuel economy.
The shining star of the new iteration is the completely new six-cylinder boxer engines which come in two varieties - a 2.9-litre unit in the Boxster or a 3.4-litre unit in the Boxster S. Interestingly, these engines share the same design as the highly-efficient power units of the
911 model series.
Noteworthy is the upgrade of the "basic" engine to generate maximum output of 255 bhp (188 kW) at 6,400 rpm - something that was not possible in the previous model that had a 2.7-litre capacity. With Direct Fuel Injection, the Boxster S tops the charts with an output of 310 bhp (228 kW) at 6,400 rpm for an impressive power-to-weight ratio of 4.4 kg/bhp or 9.7 lb.
Performance comes with minimal fuel cost, especially when paired with the brand-new Porsche-Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) double-clutch gearbox. The Boxster S zooms from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 5.2 seconds while the "regular" Boxster only takes 5.8 seconds with PDK. On top of that, both the vehicles comply to the EU4 standard with fuel consumption of 8.9 liters (equivalent to 26.3 mpg US) for the Boxster and 9.2 liters (equivalent to 25.5 mpg US) in the Boxster S.
