Porsche, renowned for its high-performance sports cars and sport utility vehicles (SUV), recently unveiled the Porsche Cayenne Hybrid prototype to international journalists, previewing what consumers can expect by the end of the decade. Impressing crowds at the 2007 L.A. Auto Show, the vehicle promises to have average fuel consumption rates around 9.8 liters/100 kilometers in the New European Driving Cycle and about 24 miles per gallon in the US FTP cycle. In the future, these figures may be further lowered to an average fuel consumption of 8.9 liters/kilometer (roughly 26 miles per gallon). Especially during city use, the
Cayenne is expected to have a marked decrease in fuel consumption of 30%.
The Cayenne Hybrid's unique design places a hybrid module (containing a clutch and electric motor) in line between the combustion engine and the transmission, rather than branching outwards via a planetary gearset. This parallel format is more compatible with the Cayenne platform and provides improved acceleration and engine flexibility.
The heart of the Porsche Cayenne Hybrid is the Hybrid Manager, controlling the 20,000 data parameters associated with the combustion engine, electric motor, and battery. This level of micromanagement allows the car to switch between fuel sources seamlessly, providing fuel efficiency and power. In addition, its electro-hydraulic steering, the first of its kind in a vehicle of this kind, ensures safe and predictable handling characteristics and the agility expected of a Porsche SUV. Further, the Porsche Cayenne Hybrid has incorporated electric units to power its power steering, vacuum pump, brakes, air conditioning, and oil pump, all for the purpose of decreasing fuel consumption.
