Renault 16

The iconic Renault 16 was an executive car produced by French manufacturer Renault between 1965 and 1980 in Sandouville, Le Havre, France. In 1966, it was voted European Car of the Year by a board of European motoring journalists for its exemplary design. Over 1,845,959 R16s were constructed throughout its manufacturing tenure. In the autumn of 1965, Renault released one of the world's first hatchbacks - a middle ground between a saloon and estate bodystyle - which later became the most popular automotive bodystyle worldwide. The R16 was met with great success in most of Europe for its roominess and comfortableness. It came with all the essentials at the best possible price. Initially, the R16 ran on a 1.4 litre gasoline engine in its GL specification; then a more powerful 1.6 litre TS variant followed, which could go beyond 100 mph. In 1973, the top-spec model TX was launched with a 5-speed manual transmission and included power windows and remote door locking, features not typically found in family cars at the time. In 1980, the Renault 16 was replaced by the less popular Renault 20. Even as it neared its 15th year, the R16 was still one of the most sought-after family cars on sale in Europe. Its grille design has been vastly praised by Renault's current style chief, Patrick le Quement, so much so that he has featured a tribute to the 'bird-beak' look in the company's Laguna, Mégane, and Scénic models of the 1990s. By the time the Renault 16 discontinued its production, most other European manufacturers had at least one hatchback out on the market. This idea had also started to spread to Asian and American carmakers. Several hatchbacks that were influenced by the R16, between 1965 and 1979, include the Austin Maxi (1969), Fiat 127 (1971), Peugeot 104 (1972), Volkswagen Golf (1974), Chrysler Alpine (1975), Opel Kadett City (1975), Rover SD1 (1976), Ford Fiesta (1977), and the Chrysler Horizon (1977).
