Renault 16 TX

The Renault 16 (R16) was an executive car produced by French manufacturer Renault from 1965 to 1980 in Sandouville, Le Havre, France. In 1966, the R16 was voted European Car of the Year by a panel of European motoring journalists, and over 1,845,959 units were produced during the car's lifetime. The R16 was revolutionary for its time, introducing the hatchback body type, which eventually became the world's most popular car bodystyle. It proved to be a popular model in Europe, garnering praise for its generous interior space and amenities - including a 1.4 L gasoline engine in GL specification or a more powerful 1.6 L TS engine, as well as power windows and central door locking, never before seen in family cars. The top-end TX model was released in 1973 and featured a 5-speed manual transmission. When the R16 was replaced by the unfortunately unsuccessful Renault 20 in 1980, the veteran hatchback was still one of the most popular and praised on the European car market. In fact, modern Renault design chief Patrick le Quement revealed his admiration for the R16 and incorporated elements of its design - particularly the "bird-beak" grille - into many contemporary models, such as the Laguna, Mégane, and Scénic. In the following years, many hatchback cars were released, either being directly inspired by the feat the R16 accomplished or simply taking concept of the hatchback body style and building upon it. Examples of significant models released between 1965 and 1979 are the Austin Maxi (1969), Fiat 127 (1971), Peugeot 104 (1972), Volkswagen Golf (1974), Chrysler Alpine (1975), Opel Kadett City (1975), Rover SD1 (1976), Ford Fiesta (1977), and the Chrysler Horizon (1977).
