Renault 19 TS Europa

The Renault 19 was first presented in June 1988, replacing the ageing Renault 9 and 11. Styled by Giorgetto Giugiaro, the 19 was initially available with the OHV C-type Cléon 1.2 and 1.4 L engines, depending on the market, as well as with a 1.4L and 1.7L E-type engine. A turbocharged version of the 1.4L engine was added in early 1992. It featured Renault's new "Energy" engine and was intended to be the last numeric-named car. The 19 was basically offered in two versions: hatchback and sedan, the latter being known as the 19 Chamade. In many markets, the Chamade badged was dropped with the 1992 facelift and in its place, "Europa" was used. A drop-top version built by Karmann was launched in 1991 with the phase I design, available only with the two most powerful engine options. The R19 was praised for its interior comfort and excellent handling, and in the fall of 1990 a four-speed automatic transmission became available for the fuel-injected top versions. Later, five-speed manuals and a three-speed automatic were added. In the summer of 1992, Renault introduced a revamped model with a substantial restyle on the front and rear parts, and for the left-hand-drive market models it featured a new dashboard and interior, while the right-hand-drive models kept the original design. The "Energy" series engines were gradually introduced, and 1.8 litre units took the place of the 1.7 units.
