Renault 5 GTL 5-door

The Renault 5 was a supermini produced by the French automaker Renault from 1972 to 1996, and was sold as the Le Car in the United States during the 1970s and 1980s. The first generation of the R5 (1972-1984) was designed by Michel Boue and came with a steeply sloping rear hatchback and front fascia. Under the skin, it was mainly based on the Renault 4 and featured an OHV engine of between 850 and 1400 cc. The front wheels were driven by a longitudinal-mounted engine with torsion bar suspension, and it was originally equipped with a dashboard-mounted gearshift before this design was replaced with a floor-mounted shifter. The R5 also boasted unusual door handles, which were created from a cut-out in the door panel and B-pillar. Versions released during this time included the Renault 5 Alpine (Gordini in the United Kingdom), Alpine/Gordini Turbo, and a sedan version called the Renault 7. The Renault Le Car, destined for the North American market and sold by American Motors, was finally released in 1976. This version came with a 1297cc engine that produced 55hp and had a more conventional floor-mounted gear shift. It was discontinued in 1984.
