Renault 5 TL 1971 posters

Renault 5 TL

The Renault 5 was the French carmaker Renault's first venture into the supermini market, first released in January 1972. The car's main feature was its styling, designed by Michel Boue, which included a sloping rear hatchback and front fascia, and unique door handles that were simply cutouts in the bodywork and B-pillar. The car borrowed much of its mechanical components from the Renault 4, including its longitudinally-mounted engine, and OHV engines ranging from 850 to 1400cc. In 1976, the R5 was released to the North American market under the name "Le Car", which was met with some ridicule, as it literally translates to "the coach". The North American version featured a 1297cc engine producing 55hp, along with a standard floor-mounted gear shifter. Versions of the first generation Renault 5 included the Alpine (Gordini in the UK), Alpine/Gordini Turbo, and a four-door version known as the Renault 7 that was built by FASA-Renault in Spain. Renault 5 production ran until 1984.
