Renault 8

The Renault 8 and Renault 10 were compact automobiles created by French producer Renault in the 1960s and early 1970s. The 8 was launched in 1962 and the 10, a more upscale version of the 8, was revealed in 1965. They both stopped production in France in 1971, yet were produced in Bulgaria till 1970 under the name Bulgar Renault and in Spain until 1976. The 8 used the same engine as the out-going Renault Dauphine, but had a notable difference in that it was the first car of its size to use 4-wheel disc brakes. The engine was a 956 cc creating 44 PS. It was followed by the 8 Major in 1964, which had an 1108 cc engine forming 50 PS. At the same time, Renault released the 8 Gordini featuring a tuned engine of the same capacity however producing a higher 90 PS with a five-speed manual transmission. This unique model was only available in blue with two white stripes. In 1965, in place of the 8 Major, the Renault 10 Major was released, coming equipped with various features that soon made it into the 8. Also notable was that this model was the first to get a fully automatic transmission, which was assigned with a push-button gear selector. In 1967, the 8 Gordini was improved with two extra headlights and an upgraded 1255 cc engine rated at 100 PS. The 8 and 10 were heavily reworked for 1968, with some of the 10's features being included in the 8. Also, the 10 was given new rectangular headlights as well as different styling. In 1970, the 8S came out, a sportier model with an 1108 cc engine making 60 PS. The R10 1300, powered by a 1289 cc engine from the new Renault 12, became available in the same year. Renault halted production and sales of the 8 and 10 in France in 1971, yet the latter's stamp continued in the Spanish and Mexican markets until 1976 with the 8 and 8TS which were quite similar to the original 8S.
