Renault 8 Gordini 1300

The Renault 8 (model R1130), released in June 1962, was based off the Renault Dauphine, and shared its basic architecture and 2,270 mm (89.4 in) wheelbase. The boxy style was designed by Philippe Charbonneaux at unusually short notice. The Renault 8 was actually 30 mm (1.2 in) narrower than the Dauphine, however was still able to feature thick cushioned front seats that were an impressive 560 mm (22.0 in) wide. The R8 was powered by an all new 956 cc Cléon-Fonte engine and boasted the unique feature of a sealed for life cooling system. Additionally, this car was revolutionary for having four-wheel disc brakes, a precedent for a saloon car of this size. Automatic transmissionIn 1963, for France the Renault 8 was given an automatic transmission of unique design, created by Jaeger. This transmission was originally referred to as an automatic transmission, but was in fact an automatic clutch, inspired by the German Saxomat. The clutch was replaced by a powder ferromagnetic coupler from Smiths design, with a three-speed mechanical synchromesh transmission.
