Renault 8 S

The Renault 8 (R1130) was released in June 1962, based on the Renault Dauphine. Despite being 30 mm (1.2 in) narrower, Renault was still able to feature thick cushioned front seats that were an impressive 560 mm (22.0 in) wide. It was powered by a 956 cc Cléon-Fonte engine, generating 44 PS (32 kW; 43 hp). The cooling system had been designed to be sealed for life. A revolutionary feature was the fitting of four-wheel disc brakes, which was then a rarity for saloon cars this size. In 1965, Renault's Spanish affiliate released their own version of the R8 for the Spanish market, which instead featured drum brakes. For 1963, a unique and innovative automatic transmission was designed by Jaeger and was first shown at the Paris Motor Show. Despite being described as an automatic transmission, this version was actually more of an automatic clutch, somewhat inspired by the German Saxomat. The transmission itself was a three-speed mechanical unit with synchromesh on all gears.
