Renault 9 GT 1982 posters

Renault 9 GT

The Renault 9 and Renault 11 are small family cars that were produced in saloon and hatchback variants by the French manufacturer Renault between the 1981-1988 model years. Created by noted French automobile designer Robert Opron, they made use of a transverse front-wheel drive engine configuration and four-wheel independent suspension. This design earned them the prestigious accolades of being awarded the European Car of the Year for 1982 and Motor Trend Car of the Year from Motor Trend and Car and Driver 10Best from Car and Driver for 1983. Additionally, American Motors Corporation (AMC) manufactured these cars to sell in North American and Colombian markets under the names of Renault Alliance and Renault Encore. With production ceasing in 2000, the vehicles also had three facelifts during its lifetime. The original model released in 1981 was dubbed the Phase 1 Renault 9, the Phase 2 was fired out in 1983 with the introduction of the Renault 11, and Phase 3 gave it a sleeker more aerodynamic look in 1987. Finally, the Phase 4 version rounded out the car’s career in 1997 specifically for the Turkish market. It featured round head and tail lights, ovoid body cladding around the bumpers and boot lid to give an overall modern look, and the “Broadway” badge in addition to the Renault 9 nameplate.
