Renault 9 GTL

The Renault 9 and 11 were cars developed by French automobile manufacturer Renault between the years 1982 and 1988. The 9 was an award-winning four-door sedan, whilst the 11 was a three- or five-door hatchback. On the North American market, these cars were known as the Renault Alliance and Renault Encore, respectively. In essence, the two models were identical apart from their external features - the 11 featured square twin headlights, for instance. Both cars were powered by outdated C-type overhead valve engines in 1.1L or 1.4L capacities. Renault also produced the 9 Turbo and 11 Turbo, which had a more powerful turbocharged engine from the Renault 5. Additional power was available from the 1.7L F-type engine, developed with Volvo, found in the upmarket TXE and GTX versions. The Renault 9 and 11 were both considered unremarkable cars, offering basic suspension and mediocre driving experience. The exception was the Alliance and Encore - known as the Alliance Cup - which had a definite advantage in ride and handling compared to other small cars available on the market at the time. The Alliance did have one moment of stardom in 1987, when a limited run of the one-year only GTA coupe and convertible were produced with high-performance 2.0L engine, sport suspension and aerodynamics. That same year would mark the end of the 9 and 11 as the arrival of the 19 was imminent. Subsequent to Chrysler's acquisition of American Motors in 1987, the Alliance and Encore ceased production.
