Renault 9 TXE
The Renault 9 and Renault 11 were compact automobiles produced by the French car manufacturer Renault between 1982 and 1988. Sold as the Renault Alliance in the North American market, the 9 was a 4-door sedan that was named the European Car of the Year in 1982. Thanks to its pleasantly stiff suspension and classic styling, it was chosen for Car and Driver's Ten Best list for 1983 and dubbed the Motor Trend Car of the Year. Meanwhile, the Renault 11 was a 3- or 5-door hatchback that also made an appearance in North America as the Renault Encore.
Under the skin these two cars were identical, built to replace the aging Renault 14. In 1984, the 9 received the 11's distinguished front end — two square twin headlights — and were both redesigned for the 1987 model year. The two cars were powered by the same outdated C-type engine in 1.1L or 1.4L form. Yet the 9/11 Turbo received a more powerful 115 hp DIN (85 kW) turbocharged engine from the Renault 5. The TXE and GTX models then featured the newer F-type engine in 1.7L form.
The Renault 9 and 11 served until 1988, when the Renault 19 took over. Meanwhile, the Alliance and Encore were dropped after Chrysler's buyout of AMC in 1987, although the Alliance did get one last hurrah with the limited edition 1987 GTA coupe and convertible that featured higher-performance 2.0L engine and other "sporting" upgrades. Formerly used in the 1985 James Bond film A View to a Kill, the 11 also had its moment in the spotlight.
Despite their limited power and unremarkable driving experience, these cars have earned their place as cherished vehicles. Their shortsightedness in horsepower is often considered one of the contributing factors to American Motors' demise.
