Renault 9 Turbo

The Renault 9 and Renault 11 were compact automobiles produced by the French car manufacturer Renault between 1982 and 1988. For the North American market, they were branded as the Renault Alliance and Encore respectively. The sedan 9 was introduced in 1982, and won the European Car of the Year Award that same year. Meanwhile, the 3- to 5-door hatchback 11 was released in late 1983, and marketed as the Encore in the US. Both vehicles shared the same core components, meant to replace the Renault 14. The 9 and 11 featured unremarkable overhead-valve engines in the 1.1L or 1.4L range, and a basic suspension design, resulting in an ordinary driving experience. However, the 9 Turbo and 11 Turbo models stood out with their turbocharged Renault 5 engine, producing a respectable 115 hp DIN (85 kW). Later on, the F-type engine – developed in collaboration with Volvo – was available as a 1.7L for the upmarket TXE and GTX versions. The Alliance and Encore were well-liked in the US, with Car and Driver listing them on the Ten Best list of 1983, and Motor Trend even awarding it the Car of the Year title the following year. Despite their lower engine power, the Alliance and Encore were praised for their rides and handling, having an own SCCA spec-racing series - Alliance Cup - to speak of. The 9 and 11 ceased production in 1988, when they were replaced by the Renault 19. The Alliance and Beur were dropped in 1987 following Chrysler's buyout of AMC. Still, the Alliance got a last hurrah in 1987 with the one-year-only GTA coupe and convertible, featuring a higher-performance 2.0L engine, sport suspension, an aerodynamic body kit, Ronal wheels, and other "sporting" upgrades. Meanwhile, the 11 gained recognition as the car Bond stole to pursue an assassin in the 1985 film, A View to a Kill. This scene was executed by famed French stuntman Rémy Julienne, where the car had its roof ripped off in the car chase and is then chopped in half in a collision with another car (a Renault 20).
