Renault Avantime 2002 posters

Renault Avantime

The Renault Avantime was an iconic, yet short-lived, coupé/MPV automobile manufactured from 2001 to 2003. Its radical design was developed by the French manufacturer Matra in exchange for later producing their own Renault Espace model. The Avantime, aptly named to signal the idea of the vehicle being ahead of its time, featured an aerodynamic two-door pillarless design and could comfortably seat four people. It was powered by Renault's 24 valve, 250 hp (186 kW) 3.0L V6 engine, mated to a 6-speed transmission. Unfortunately, despite its innovative design, the Avantime sorely lacked sufficient market success, solely selling 8,545 units over the two-year production. This, along with Matra choosing to end their automotive production business in 2003, led to Renault discontinuing the Avantime. It was highly unusual for such a unique vehicle, particularly of its size, to be full-bodied and convertible yet remain unsuccessful. Nevertheless, the Avantime remains an intriguing landmark in automotive history.
