Renault Clio 1.5 dCi

In 1998, Renault released the second generation of its popular Clio model, featuring a considerably more rounded and bulbous design than its predecessor. This car was sold for less than €8,000 and included a range of components made of alternative materials such as plastic and aluminium - ultimately allowing savings in weight and repair costs, following criticisms of corrosion for the previous model. The engine lineup initially offered 1.2L, 1.4L and 1.6L petrol options and a 1.9L diesel. In 2000, all petrol engines were updated with more powerful and economical 16-valve versions, one of which being the 16V sportive option which included a 1.6L engine and a top speed of 220km/h (140mph). The top-of-the-range Clio variant was the Clio V6 Renault Sport, which included a 230PS (170kW) 3.0L V6 engine sourced from the Renault Laguna, with a top speed of 235km/h (146mph). This was initially conceived for a one-make racing series and was mid-engined and rear-wheel drive. The project manager from 1992 to 1998 for the Clio II was Pierre Beuzit. In 2000, the Clio received a few minor updates, such as revised specification levels, a new instrument cluster and a passenger airbag fitted as standard. This model achieved a four-star Euro NCAP rating in 2000, which was at the time considered class-leading.
