Renault Clio Renault Sport 2.0 16V

The design of the second generation Renault Clio, launched in Spring 1998, was significantly more rounded and bulbous than its predecessor. In order to reduce weight and repair costs, a number of its components were made of extraordinary materials. This included a plastic front wing and an aluminum bonnet in some versions. The engine lineup at the bottom was 1.2 L, 1.4 L and 1.6 L petrol engines and a 1.9 L diesel. In early 2000, a sportive 16V version with a 1.6 L 16-valve engine was added, alongside an upgrade of all the older petrol engines to 16-valve versions. The Clio Renault Sport, with a 169 PS (124 kW) 2.0 L 16-valve engine and a top speed of 220 km/h (140 mph) was available for less than €17,500. The most pricey model in the range was the mid-engined, rear-wheel drive Renault Clio V6 Sport, which had a 230 PS (170 kW) 3.0 L V6 engine and a top speed of 235 km/h (146 mph). In 2000, the Clio range underwent a few minor updates with revised specification levels, a new instrument cluster, and a passenger airbag fitted as standard for every unit. This led to the Renault Clio earning a highly sought-after four-star rating from Euro NCAP in the same year - a feat unheard of in the competitive market then.
