Renault Dauphine

The Renault Dauphine was a car built by the French automaker from 1956 to 1962. It was designed to replace the successful 4CV model and was larger and heavier than its predecessor. Its engine was increased in size and power from 760 cc to 845 cc and 19 hp to 32 hp (14 to 24 kW), though it still had lackluster performance (acceleration from 0-60 mph took 32 seconds). It was originally intended to be called the Corvette, but to avoid confusion the name was changed to Dauphine. To add to the car's power, a limited edition model was built with 37 hp (27.2 kW) and a special edition series called the 1093 with 55 hp (41 kW) and a top speed of 140 km/h. A luxury version known as the Ondine was also released. Judson Research & Mfg. Co. produced a supercharger for the Renault Dauphine that could be installed in two hours with no modifications. Unfortunately, the car became well-known for its poor performance and reliability, leading to Car Talk voting it the 9th Worst Car Of The Millennium. But, due to its age, the Dauphine is now popular as an antique and classic car.
