The Renault Espace is a large MPV that was originally Designer by Chrysler UK and Matra of France in the late 1970s. It became a reality in 1984 when it was released by Matra in France. Currently in its fourth generation, the Espace can seat up to seven passengers, while the Renault Grand Espace has a longer-wheelbase that is designed to hold the passengers' luggage as well. The Espace was actually the first minivan along with the Dodge Caravan.
Espace I (1984-1991)
The design for the Espace was created by the British designer Fergus Pollock when he was working for Chrysler UK's Coventry design centre. Chrysler UK and Simca later partnered with Matra to finalize the design and plan the production. Initially, PSA Peugeot Citroën wasn't on board with the project, however, later Matra brought it to Renault. As a result, the car was eventually produced with a fiberglass body mounted on a warm-galvanized steel chassis, and manufactured in the same factory as the Talbot Matra Murena.
