Renault Grand Espace IV 3.0 dCi

The fourth generation of Renault's Espace, the Grand Espace IV 3.0 dCi, is a large MPV designed in collaboration with Matra of France, and manufactured by Matra in France. It is marketed by Renault, and seats up to seven passengers. The Grand Espace is a longer-wheelbase version, designed to offer additional legroom and room for luggage. Along with the Dodge Caravan, the Espace was one of the original minivans.

Espace I (1984-1991)

The Espace's design was originally developed by Fergus Pollock, a British designer employed with Chrysler UK (formerly the Rootes Group), at their design centre in Coventry [1]. Matra, which was associated with Simca, the French subsidiary of Chrysler, later collaborated with Pollock on the project.

Initially intended for sale as a Talbot, the Espace was expected to replace the Matra Rancho station wagon. Early prototypes were built using Simca parts, and thus featured a grille in the style of the Simca 1307 (Chrysler Alpine). In 1978, Chrysler UK and Simca were sold to French firm PSA Peugeot Citroën (PSA), and, as PSA was unconvinced that the Espace could be a successful and profitable model, gave the design to Matra.

The Matra concept ultimately became the Renault Espace. The design included a fiberglass body mounted on a warm-galvanized steel chassis, using the same technique and assembly line as was employed for the Talbot Matra Murena. The introduction of the Espace cut production of the Murena, freeing up space at the factory for the newcomer.
