Renault Fregate

The Renault Frégate was a large car produced by the French automaker Renault between 1951 and 1960. It was created in the aftermath of World War II in order to improve Renault's image and provide more modern cars for the quickly recovering economy. Several prototypes were designed before the Frégate was finally put into production. Its design featured a front-engined layout, as opposed to Renault's earlier rear-engined 4CV. The debut of the Frégate occurred at the 1950 Paris Motor Show, but it was not until November 1951 that the first model was delivered. It was initially available in two trim levels, Affaires and Amiral. In response to complaints about the lack of power from the 2 litre engine, Renault introduced the new 2141 cc Etendard engine in 1956, producing 77 hp. 1956 was also the year when the popular estate model, the Domaine, and the luxurious Grand Pavois specification were launched. Sales of the Frégate gradually declined throughout the 1950s, and production finally ceased in 1960. In total, 163,383 Frégates were made in Flins, France.
