Renault Megane II Saloon

The Renault Mégane II Saloon was launched in 2002, replacing the Mégane 19 that had been in production since 1995. It was voted European Car of the Year in 2003 and achieved a 5-star safety rating in the EuroNCAP crash tests. This was the first car in its class to do so. The new Mégane also incorporated innovative keywords such as the Renault Card keyless ignition system, standard on the car. In addition, an available panoramic glass sunroof was another areas in which Renault pioneered. It was also offered in various body styles: three- and five-door hatchback, sedan, coupé, convertible and station wagon. The RenaultSport (RS) version of the 3-door and 5-door hatchbacks was introduced, equipped with a turbocharged petrol 2.0 L 16v engine producing 225 hp. It was designed to offer improved handling with changes to the front and rear suspension geometry. The stylish retractable hardtop version of the coupé-convertible incorporated a folding glass roof mechanism built by Karmann. The Mégane I was produced in Renault's Douai plant in northern France, and in the spanish plant of Palencia. Power came from the Renault E-type engine in 1.4 L, 1.6 L, 1.8 L and the F-type unit in both 1.9 L diesel and 2.0 L petrol forms. A mild facelift in 1999 gave the Mégane I a modified grille, more advanced safety features and upgraded equipment. The newer Mégane II also marked the introduction of the shorter and longer versions of the Scénic MPV, which offered seven-seat versatility.
