Renault Twingo 2002 posters

Renault Twingo

The Renault Twingo is a city car built by the French automaker Renault since 1993. The Twingo quickly became popular in Europe due to its unusual looks and its ease of use. It was designed under Patrick Le Quément, Renault's chief designer, who hoped that introducing a riskier design would help Renault's market share recover from its Renault 9 and 11 models. Some believe the design of the Renault Twingo was inspired by the ships from the Konami videogame Twinbee, while others attribute it to the Polish prototype Beskid.

The project

At the time of release, the Renault Twingo featured a unique and revolutionary instrument panel set up - the speedometer, fuel gauge and clock were centrally mounted, with the odometer and trip recorder selected by a switch on the steering wheel stalk. The car also had a sliding rear seat for increased boot space or rear legroom. Its boot parcel shelf was innovative too - it was attached to the inside of the tailgate and could be raised with the tailgate to reach the rear window when necessary.

British market

When first released, Renault were concerned that the Renault Twingo would not be popular in the UK and could even take away sales from the recently released Clio, so they decided against producing a right-hand drive version. However, the great success of much later entrants to the A-class segment, such as the Fiat Cinquecento, Ford Ka, Opel Corsa and Smart Fortwo, proved their hesitance to be a mistake. Despite its sales success, the Renault Twingo still lags behind the Ford Ka in terms of market share.
