Rover 600

The Rover 600 Series was a compact executive car produced by the British car maker Rover from 1993 to 1999. Featuring a complete re-skin of the Tochigi-developed Honda Accord, it was built in the UK by Honda in Swindon. Although the core structure and vast majority of the engineering content was sourced from Honda, there was a small Rover team on-site in Japan during the design phase. This enabled the use of colour and trim derivatives in order to help distinguish the Rover from the Honda. The powertrains featured in the Rover 600 included 1.8, 2.0 and 2.3-litre straight-4 petrol engines and a 2.0-litre turbodiesel and a turbocharged petrol engine, both of which were developed by Rover itself. The interior of the 600 was stylish with wood and chrome trim and relatively high levels of equipment, but it suffered from limited rear legroom. Being based on the Honda Ascot Innova, the only difference being that some models of the Rover featured a passenger airbag. Performance-wise, the Rover 600 was reported to have a comfortable but unsporting ride. Despite the high levels of equipment included, prices were competitive in the large family car segment and considerably lower than similar compact executive cars such as the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class. After six years, Rover 600 production ceased in Spring 1999 when it was replaced by the retro-styled Rover 75, which also replaced the larger 800 Series.
