Rover 75 Vanden Plas

The Rover 75 was a complete redesign of the Rover 600, under the direction of Rover Group designer, Richard Woolley. Following BMW's takeover, however, the plan was changed and a new model was developed, with the codename "R40". The retro design impressed BMW management and both companies believed that it was the perfect choice for Rover. It also separated it from BMW's E46 3 Series in the executive segment. Under the hood, BMW provided the Rover 75’s M47R motor, which was a mild version of BMW’s 2.0 litre turbodiesel. This same core engine was also found in the 3 and 5-Series as well as the Land Rover Freelander. For petrol engines, the Rover 75 was equipped with Rover’s K series 1.8 litre four cylinder engines with DOHC 16 valve forms and Rover/ Motorola MEMS engine management. A larger, quad cam KV6 engine was used with either 2.0 or 2.5 litre displacement and 24 valves with Siemens engine management. The 2.0 litre was dropped when the more economical 1.8 litre turbo was introduced due to UK government taxation regulations. Manual cars were fitted with a Getrag 5 speed transmission and hydraulic clutch while those with automatic transmission were given 5 speed Jatco units.
