The Saab 9-3 Aero Convertible is a compact executive car manufactured by the Swedish automaker Saab. Originally developed on the GM2900 platform, it was upgraded to the GM Epsilon platform, and is also shared by cars such as the Opel Vectra and Cadillac BLS. In 1997, the 9-3 was released for the 1998 model year, as a revised version of the previous Saab 900 (1994-1997 model). To simplify the naming strategy of Saab's small cars, it was simply known as the "9-3," pronounced as "nine three." First generation (1998-2002/3) The first generation 9-3 was a major upgrade of the Saab 900 (NG) and was first introduced for the 1999 model year. 1,100 changes were made, including a revised suspension in attempt to improve ride and handling, as well as improved crash-worthiness with safety features such as standard side-impact airbags with head protection and active headrests. It was available as a three or five-door hatchback, and as a two-door convertible. It was the last small Saab to use the company's H engine, and performed an extensive moose test.
