Saab 9-3 ePower Concept

Saab Automobile is taking its first steps toward an all-electric vehicle with the Saab 9-3 ePower Concept. Making its debut at the 2010 Paris Motor Show, the prototype will be a part of a test fleet of 70 vehicles that will be evaluated in extensive field trials in Sweden beginning in early 2010. The cars will be tested under various driving conditions to measure progress in the development of a purpose-built electric Saab vehicle. Its projected driving range is up to approximately 200 kilometers with the help of high-density energy storage in lithium-ion battery cells. The Saab 9-3 ePower Concept is a collaboration between Saab Automobile, Boston Power (batteries), Electroengine in Sweden AB (electric power trains), Innovatum (project management) and Power Circle (Sweden's electric power industry trade organization). As the first electric vehicle from Saab, the mid-size sports combi provides comfort and size in the body style of a wagon, achieving zero emissions. An electric motor creating 135 kW/184 hp powers the front wheels through a single-speed transmission and provides a quick 0–100 km/h acceleration of 8.5 seconds and a top speed of 150 km/h. The Saab 9-3 SportCombi houses the electric architecture within its dimensions.
