The Saab 9-5 is an executive car produced by the Swedish automaker which succeeded the Saab 9000 in 1997. It is available as both a sedan and a station wagon, with the former having a drag coefficient of 0.29, the latter having a value of 0.31. Loaded with features, the 9-5 utilized tracks to secure cargo and a sliding load floor for easier loading.
The high-performance variant of the 9-5, the Aero, was outfitted with a powerful engine, producing 260 hp ECE (194 kW) and 350 N·m (258 ft·lbf) of torque (370 N·m or 273 ft·lbf with 20 second overboost function). Saab mentioned tuner Hirsch Performance in particular, which can increase this figure to a maximum of 305 hp ECE (224 kW).
Not just a powerful car, the 9-5 sported many safety features, such as Saab Active Head Restraints which moved up and forward in case of a rear-end collision, to reduce the likelihood of whiplash. Additionally, the Night Panel feature featured an illuminated instrument panel and permitted dousing of the instrument panel, excepting essential information for less distraction when night driving.
The 9-5 runs on Saab's B205 and B235 straight-4 engines, as well as Isuzu's DMAX diesel V6. From 1999 to 2002, the 9-5 featured a GM 54° V6 powered by a low-pressure turbocharger, paired with the automatic transmission and distinguishable from those with the single tailpipe. More recently, in 2005, the European market saw an updated version of the 2.0 L turbocharged I4, known as the 2.0t BioPower and running on E85, producing 132 kW (180 hp) at 5500 r/min. The base 2.3 L turbocharged straight-4 was bumped to 260 hp, up from 185.
Saab markets the model as the 9-5, despite badging it as a 95, and it should not be confused with the Saab 95, produced from 1959 to 1978. This model is pronounced "Nine Five" instead of "Ninety Five".
