Saab 900

The Saab 900 NG (known among enthusiasts as the GM900 NG900) was a compact car/compact executive car unveiled in 1994, replacing the earlier 'classic' Saab 900. Thanks to a significant investment from General Motors, the Saab 900 Page was based on the Opel Vectra platform and featured design cues from the 'classic' 900. The NG900 had a cW value of 0.30 and was available as a three-door, five-door, and convertible. The "Talladega" version was a special release, released after a successful endurance test at the Talladega racetrack in 1996. Powering the NG900 were engines such as the 2.0 and 2.3L Saab 16-valve DOHC (B202, B204, and B234), plus the 2.5L GM 54° V6 engine. Additionally, the classic design boasted a rear-hinged hood (bonnet), much like the Saab 9000. The new engine management system operated via Saab Direct Ignition (SDI) + Automatic Performance Control (APC) + Bosch LH Jetronic or Saab Trionic, although for 2.0 and 2.3L naturally aspirated engines the distributor operated ignition was re-introduced in 1996. An iconic feature of the Saab 900 was the 'Black Panel' (later dubbed the 'Night Panel'), which at the press of a button enabled the instrument panel lights to be extinguished, just as in aircraft. Speedometer lights would remain illuminated up to 85 mph, whilst the rest would light up over 800 mph. To ensure driver attention, any necessary Warnings or Alerts would be highlighted when lit. This system was later carried into the Saab 9-3 and 9-5. The 'Sensonic Clutch' was another innovation in the Saab 900, in which no clutch pedal was necessary, and gear change was instead activated through hand-pressure on the gear shift knob. Engines include:
  • 2.0 L B204 full pressure 16-valve turbo intercooled, 175 hp DIN (129 kW)
  • 2.0 L B204 full pressure 16-valve turbo, special with a red APC controller (see below), 185 hp 136 kW)
  • 2.0 L B204 normally-aspirated 16-valve four cylinder, 133 hp
  • 2.3 L B234 normally-aspirated 16-valve four cylinder, 150 hp
  • 2.5 L 54° V6, 24-valve, 170 hp DIN (125 kW)
