Saab 900 Convertible

The second generation Saab 900 (also known as the GM900 NG900 to enthusiasts) was introduced in 1994 as a compact car/compact executive car, taking over from its predecessor, the classic Saab 900. After its substantial investment from General Motors, the 900 was based on the Opel Vectra and its body frame featured design elements from the classic 900. The cW value was improved to 0.30 series and included S and SE models, three-door, five-door, and convertible body styles. In 1996, the 900 underwent the Talladega endurance test, setting a record-breaking pace which led to the creation of the 'Talladega' version. The new 900 featured various Saab 16-valve DOHC engines (B202, B204, B234) and a General Motors 2.5L V6. Depending on the model, the 900 was equipped with Saab Direct Ignition (SDI) + Automatic Performance Control (APC) + Bosch LH Jetronic or Saab Trionic unit, or a distributor operated ignition. The turbocharged B204 variant used the Saab Trionic 5 system. In comparison to the classic Saab 900, the NG900 was fitted with a transversely-mounted engine and rear-hinged hood. Also incorporated was the 'Black Panel' (later the 'Night Panel'), an aircraft-inspired system which allowed the instrument panel lights to be turned off simply by pressing a button, while the speedometer remained illuminated up to 85 mph. If the driver needed to be alerted while driving, the relevant instrument would illuminate to draw their attention. This system was passed on to the Saab 9-3 and Johannesburg Saab 9-5. The 'Sensonic Clutch' variant was available as an option, allowing drivers to shift gears without using a clutch pedal. Manually-operated hand pressure on the gear shift knob was sufficient to activate the electronically-controlled clutch. The engines included:
  • 2.0 L B204 full pressure 16-valve turbo intercooled, 175 hp DIN (129 kW)
  • 2.0 L B204 full pressure 16-valve turbo, special with a red APC controller (see below), 185 hp 136 kW)
  • 2.0 L B204 normally-aspirated 16-valve four cylinder, 133 hp
  • 2.3 L B234 normally-aspirated 16-valve four cylinder, 150 hp
  • 2.5 L 54° V6, 24-valve, 170 hp DIN (125 kW)
