Saab 95 Aero Sedan
The Saab 9-5 is an executive car that was produced by the Swedish automobile maker Saab. The first generation 9-5 was introduced in 1997 to replace the Saab 9000 for the 1998 model year, which was a significant progress for Saab. In the US, it was available for the 1999 model year from the spring of 1998.
Engines
The first-generation 9-5 came with Saab's B205 and B235 straight-four engines. From 2002 onwards, the 9-5 was fitted with Opel Ecotec X22DTH 2.2 diesel engine (Saab D223L) across Europe, which was then replaced by Fiat's 1.9 JTD 16V diesel straight-four in 2006. There was also a turbocharged version of the GM 54° engine, called the B308 by Saab, with an asymmetrical low-pressure turbocharger. This engine could only be combined with an automatic transmission, and cars with this configuration had twin tailpipes. The V6 engine was included in Arc, SE, and Griffin models. In 2004, it was changed to a high pressure turbo straight-four engine with a 220hp (160 kW) output, which was increased to 260hp (190 kW) for non-Aero or non-sport models in the US by 2006.
Due to engine oil sludge problems, the B205 and B235-based 9-5 models had an extensive rate of engine failures – primarily with 1999-2003 models. To resolve this, Saab refined the engine's positive crankcase ventilation system (PCV) and required the use of fully synthetic oil from 2004 and later models. For the 1999-2003 models, GM provided an eight-year warranty on the engine for original owners, as long as proof of following the manufacturer's oil change intervals can be produced. Additionally, Saab has created update kits for the 1999-2003 cars since they cannot be easily converted to accept the 2004-on version. To prevent this issue, Saab recommends using fully synthetic or synthetic blend oil.
