Saab Sonett III

The Saab Sonett series of cars started with the 94, later known as the Sonett I, and then the 'Saab 97', otherwise known as the Sonett II and III. Rolf Mellde, a designer for Saab, proposed a small number of two-seater sport cars with open tops due to racing regulations that prevented Saab from tuning their regular cars as much as necessary to be competitive. The project was done in secret and the entire cost was only 75,000 kronor. The car was titled 'Sonett' from an exclamation that Rolf Mellde exclaimed in Swedish which translates to "How nice it is". The name assertion was also used for both the Saab 92 and Saab 93. On March 16, 1956 the Sonett I was unveiled at Stockholm's Bilsalong. The car included a 748 cc two-stroke engine providing 57.5 hp and an aerodynamic body-style which was forward-thinking for the time. Unfortunately, the rules for racing were changed, allowing Saab to race with their own tuned cars, and thus only six Sonett Is were ever created. Nevertheless, on September 1996 car number one exceeded the Swedish speed record for cars under 750 cc with a speed of 159.4 km/h.
