Saturn Ion Red Line

The Saturn ION is a compact car produced by General Motors' Saturn marque, using the GM Delta platform. It debuted as a replacement for the Saturn S-series in 2003. The 2003 ION came with a 140 horsepower (104 kW) DOHC Ecotec I4 engine. The instrument panel was mounted on the top center of the dashboard, instead of behind the steering wheel. There were two versions of the ION, a sedan and the unique "quad coupe" which had two smaller rear-opening "suicide doors" in addition to the front doors. It was outfitted with either a Getrag F23 5-speed manual transmission or an Aisin AF33 5-speed automatic transmission. In 2004, the high-performance Redline variant of the ION was introduced, featuring a supercharged engine. In 2006, the exterior of the ION was refreshed to share more of a resemblance to Saturn's Aura and Sky models. The long-awaited 2.4L I4 with variable valve timing producing 170 horsepower was also made available that year for the ION3. In 2005, two previous transmissions - the Aisin 5-speed automatic and the VTi continuously variable transmission - were both discontinued due to various issues. The Aisin suffered from what is known as "shift flare," and the VTi had multiple reliability issues. The GM 4T45-E replaced both transmissions, featuring a less advanced but reliable design. Additionally, the front fascia was updated with a larger grill opening, the ECU was switched to a mass air system from speed density, the hockey-puck style steering wheel was retired in favor of that found on the 2004 Redline edition, and acoustic engine covers were installed to reduce engine noise. The base ION-1 model also got new fabrics and a height adjustment feature.
